Semma Reservations: How to Book the West Village Star

Semma is chef Vijay Kumar’s South Indian room at 60 Greenwich Avenue in the West Village, and it has quietly become one of the hardest tables in New York for a reason no other book can match: it kept collecting accolades. A Michelin star it has held since 2022, a James Beard Best Chef New York State win for Kumar in 2025, and then the No. 1 spot on the New York Times best-restaurants list for 2025, the first Indian restaurant ever to top it. How Semma’s book works

Semma takes reservations on SevenRooms, through the booking link on its own site, semma.nyc. It used to book on Resy, which is why older guides and trackers still send people there, but every reservation now runs through SevenRooms. The window is short, and the restaurant states it plainly: “Our reservations go live 15 days in advance at 9AM (EST).” So tables open 15 days ahead at 9am Eastern, and a new date becomes bookable every morning rather than in one weekly batch. Parties of seven or more go through the private dining page instead. The accolade problem

Most impossible reservations are impossible for one reason. Carbone is pure demand; 4 Charles is starved supply. Semma is unusual because three separate honors are stacking on top of each other. The Michelin star pulls the guide crowd. The James Beard win pulls the industry and the national press. And the jump to No. 1 on the Times list, up from No. 7 the year before, put Semma in front of every casual best-of reader in the city at once. A restaurant can absorb one of those. The full-service bar is the real door

Here’s the part specific to Semma, and it’s the most useful thing on this page. The bar is full-service and held for walk-ins: you can order the entire menu, not a cut-down bar list, and seats go one, two, three, and four at a time. The staff’s own advice, repeated across interviews and reviews, is to arrive a little before 5pm on a weeknight, hang out, and take a bar seat as the room opens. That single fact quietly defeats the whole reservation war. You don’t need to win the 9am sprint or catch a cancellation in the seconds it exists to eat Kumar’s food; you need to show up early and be willing to sit at the bar. Two honest caveats. First, weekend nights the bar fills fast too, so a Tuesday or Wednesday early arrival is far more realistic than a Saturday. Second, this is walk-in, so it is first-come and never a sure thing; but for a solo diner or a two-top it is the most reliable way into this room by a wide margin.

The seatings nobody fights over

• Aim at the shoulders. The war is 7 to 8:30pm. The staff itself points people toward the very first seating around 5pm and the last seating around 9pm, and trackers back this up: a late weeknight slot has been observed lasting well over two minutes when a Friday two-top lasted five seconds. If you can eat early or late, Semma gets dramatically more gettable.
• Weeknights over weekends. A Wednesday 9pm is a different animal from a Saturday 7:30pm. The accolade crowd concentrates on weekend prime time; the midweek edges of the book breathe.
• Two-tops first. The usual math holds here as everywhere: the smallest party sizes have the most inventory and the most cancellations, so a two-top has meaningfully better odds than a four-top at the same hour.
• Be exact at the 9am opening. With a daily-refreshed window, know the date roughly two weeks before you want it, be on the venue page the moment the new day appears, and reach for a shoulder slot rather than fighting the 7:30pm crowd.
• Try the sister rooms while you wait. Where cancellations actually surface

A book this contested still leaks.
