Holiday Party Restaurant Reservations: The Q4 Booking Clock

A holiday party is two different booking problems wearing one name, and confusing them is why so many end up at a mediocre room in the second week of December. One version is a private space: a back nook, a floor, the whole restaurant. That is sold by an events manager over email, on a contract, with a spending floor and a deposit, and it is on no booking app. The other is eight colleagues at a long table on a Tuesday, an ordinary reservation with an unusually crowded month around it. The first is procurement. The second is a race.

When does the December calendar actually run out?

Earlier than almost anyone plans for. The pattern event planners quote every year, and the one restaurant sales teams work to, is that December private-dining inventory is largely spoken for during September, and the marquee slots, Fridays and Saturdays from late November through the third week of December, are commonly gone by the first week of October. In 2026 those dates are Friday November 27, Saturday November 28, then December 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19. If nobody has picked one by early October, assume they are taken and change the night rather than the restaurant.

The a-la-carte table runs on a much later clock, because it enters through the restaurant's ordinary window rather than a sales calendar. A 30-day window puts Friday December 11 on sale around November 11 and December 18 around November 18. A 60 or 90-day rolling book had them live in September. Which part of a holiday party can you book online at all?

Resy, SevenRooms and OpenTable sell seats at tables in the dining room. They do not sell rooms, floors, buyouts, AV setups or bar packages. Those are a separate product with a separate sales channel inside the same building.

Shrink the party before you shrink your ambition

A team of nine has almost no December inventory. The same nine split into two bookings of four and five, same restaurant, same time, clears the online cap at hundreds of rooms that show nothing for a nine-top. What you must not do is book for more people than you have, or fewer. One French restaurant now bills fifteen euros per missing or extra person against the reserved headcount, and card holds exist because operators report guests reserving three to six tables for one evening and honoring one. Which December dates are still soft in November?

• Monday to Wednesday, any week. Attendance barely moves; availability is transformed.
• The first week of December. December 1 to 3 is far quieter than December 15 to 17.
• Lunch. Cheaper per head, easy to book, and it ends before anyone says something they regret.
• January. The emptiest month on any restaurant's calendar.

Avoid the week of December 21 onward, when kitchens start closing and the few rooms still serving are absorbing household bookings rather than office ones. Two policy details that bite corporate bookings

The reservation belongs to a person, not a company. OpenTable's published policy deactivates a diner account after four no-shows in twelve months, so an assistant booking six December parties and cancelling two late is spending their own account's standing. And Resy's terms allow "not more than one Reservation for your personal use during any one mealtime," which rules out holding a 6:30 backup while you wait on the 8:00 you prefer.

The version that works is one real booking and one watch: reserve the acceptable table now, watch the one you want, and cancel the fallback the minute the better table lands, inside its refund window. Same hedge, without a room holding an empty eight-top on December 12.

December cancellations are unusually well behaved, because corporate parties die on deadlines. Headcounts firm up, budgets get cut, a project slips, and someone releases a table three weeks out rather than eat a deposit. That inventory returns at no particular hour on no particular day.
