Christmas Day Dinner Reservations: Booking December 25

December 25 falls on a Friday in 2026, and it is the thinnest day on the restaurant calendar. Most kitchens are dark, staff are with their own families, and the houses that open are choosing to run one service with a skeleton team. The result is not that Christmas Day is competitive the way a Resy drop is competitive. It is that the denominator is tiny, which changes both where you look and when the seat you want appears.

When should you book December 25?

Two to four weeks out, which for 2026 means between November 27 and December 11. Earlier helps for the handful of destination rooms, but this is not the months-ahead exercise New Year's Eve is: restaurants that open on Christmas tend to publish the service in late November, once they know who is working it.

The arithmetic if you are chasing one room: a 30-day book puts December 25 on sale around November 25, a 28-day book around November 27, and a 14-day book around December 11. Note where the first lands. November 25 is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so a 30-day restaurant releases Christmas Day on one of the busiest nights of the year while you are three states away. A blank calendar on December 25 usually means closed

On any other date, no available times means sold out, and sold out can reverse. On December 25 it far more often means the restaurant is not serving, and that never reverses. The two look identical in an app: an empty grid. Confirm the restaurant is open at all, on its own site or its voicemail greeting, before you spend a fortnight watching a date that can never return a table.

The categories that reliably serve are structural rather than culinary. Hotel and resort dining rooms staff the day because they have guests in the building. Casino floors run continuously. Chinese restaurants have served Christmas Day in American cities for generations and many treat it as a flagship service. Indian, Thai, Japanese and Korean rooms frequently open where their European-influenced neighbors do not. Start there, not with a shortlist of the city's best restaurants, most of which are closed.

The mechanism that matters: 48 to 72 hours out

This is the biggest difference between booking December 25 and booking December 24. Christmas Day service is almost always sold with money attached, a deposit or a prepaid seat, and that means a refund deadline. Those deadlines cluster two to three days before service, and when one passes every wavering party chooses between paying and releasing. A meaningful number release.

For 2026 that puts the real second chance on Tuesday December 22 and Wednesday December 23, not on Christmas Eve and not on the morning of the 25th. Travel collapses on the same schedule: flights cancel, a parent gets sick, a family decides to cook after all, and a table for six comes back in one piece. Is your Christmas dinner a reservation or a ticket?

Check this before anything else, because it decides which tools apply. A large share of December 25 service, particularly the multi-course lunch at a serious room, is not sold as a reservation. It is a ticketed event: fixed menu, fixed seating time, full payment at checkout, no refund, sold on a ticketing platform or the restaurant's own site. Those seats never appear as availability on Resy, SevenRooms or OpenTable, and no reservation watcher of any kind, ours included, can see them.

One live change is worth knowing, with dates, because it is moving during the 2026 holiday season. American Express is folding Tock into Resy: Tock's restaurants went live on Resy on 11 August 2026, Tock's consumer site and app are being retired while its restaurant-side software continues, Resy Credit reached former Tock venues from 15 September 2026, and the combined network is described as 25,000-plus venues. Lunch is the real Christmas service

Where restaurants do open, many run one long midday-into-afternoon service and close in the evening so staff get a night. That inverts the usual fill order: 1pm and 2pm are contested, an 11:30am opening or a 4pm late lunch is where availability survives, and a true 8pm dinner may not exist anywhere in your city. If the family is holding out for a classic dinner hour, the flexible move is a different clock, not a different restaurant.

Handing the 22nd and 23rd to something that does not sleep

The tables you want come back across two specific days, at no particular hour, mostly in single blocks, claimed within minutes because everyone still looking is looking at the same four open restaurants. December 22 and 23 are also the two days most people are least able to sit with a phone. Price it honestly first, because this date makes the structure matter. First booking free, then a flat $5 charged only on a successful booking, no subscription. But a cancellation watch costs $1 to start, charged the moment the watch begins even if no table ever opens, and that $1 is not covered by the free first booking. On December 25 that is a real possibility, not a theoretical one: arm a watch on December 10, have every deposit-holder keep their table through the 22nd and 23rd, and you have spent a dollar and eaten at home. The other limits: a ticketed prepaid holiday menu is not reservation inventory and cannot be watched, a closed restaurant never returns a table, and a single returned seat is a race it can lose. Book something acceptable in early December, watch the room you actually wanted, and cancel the fallback inside its refund window when the better table lands.
