Friendsgiving Restaurant Reservations: Booking a Table for 10

Friendsgiving has one enormous advantage over every other holiday booking and one enormous disadvantage, and they are the same fact: nobody sets the date but you. There is no November 26 to count back from. The group picks a weekend, usually the one before Thanksgiving week, which in 2026 means Friday November 20 to Sunday November 22. That flexibility is the strongest card you hold, because the thing that will actually stop you is not the date. It is that there are nine of you, and nine is a number the internet does not sell.

How far ahead should you book Friendsgiving?

Four to six weeks for a normal November weekend, which for November 20 to 22 means locking it in between October 9 and October 24. Push that to six to eight weeks if the group insists on a date inside Thanksgiving week, where you compete with the holiday proper. Why does nothing show up for a party of ten?

Because a party of ten is not a table, it is a construction project. Dining rooms are built from two-tops and four-tops, so seating ten means pushing several together, blocking a section, and giving up five smaller parties in the same footprint across the evening. Google's reservations feed specification states the consequence plainly: combining tables for a larger party reduces the slots available to smaller ones, which is why an odd number can be scarcer than the even number above it. A five-top often has less availability than a six-top, because the room has six-tops and improvises fives.

The practical ceiling is the widget. Online booking on Resy, SevenRooms and OpenTable typically stops at six or eight guests. Above that the restaurant has deliberately routed you to a human, and the inventory genuinely does not exist online at any hour of any day. Refreshing will not surface it. The email will.

The honest fix: two tables, not one inflated booking

The workaround that circulates in group chats every November is to book a six-top and turn up with ten, or hold two restaurants and drop one. Do neither. Restaurants have priced this in: one French restaurant now bills fifteen euros per missing or extra person against the reserved headcount, operators report guests holding three to six reservations for a single evening and honoring one, and card holds exist to make that expensive. A room that seats ten at a six-top also seats them badly, in a corner, with one server who was not staffed for you.

The version that works, and that any host will say they prefer, is two reservations of five at the same restaurant at the same time, booked under two names, with a note asking to sit near each other. It clears the online cap at hundreds of rooms, splits the check without the twenty-minute math, and the restaurant will often join the tables once you are there.

Move the date before you lower your standards

• Saturday November 21 is the peak, and the hardest large-party night of the month outside Thanksgiving week.
• Friday November 20 is materially easier, especially for an early seating.
• Sunday November 22 is the underrated pick: big tables are far more available, service is calmer, many rooms run a Sunday family-style menu, and nobody has to be anywhere afterward.
• Tuesday or Wednesday, November 17 or 18, opens restaurants that are simply not gettable for ten on a weekend.
• Sunday brunch or a 2pm lunch is the easiest booking of all at this size, and closer to what a Thanksgiving meal is anyway.

Ask for the group menu, not the a-la-carte table

A restaurant that will not seat ten off the app will frequently seat ten on a set family-style menu at a fixed price per head, because that turns an unpredictable four-hour table into something the kitchen can fire in waves. Lead your email with it: the date, a range of acceptable times, the headcount, and a line saying you are happy with a set menu. It changes the answer often enough to be the highest-yield sentence in the message. Expect a card on file, a per-head minimum at bigger rooms, and a final-headcount deadline a few days out. When the weekend you want shows nothing

Book the Sunday, or the Tuesday, or the lunch. For a group of nine that is not a consolation prize, it is the better evening. But if the group is immovable and the room is full, the remaining path is the returned table, and above four people those come back in an unusual way: as a whole block when one large booking collapses, gone within minutes because every other organizer in the city wants the same shape.
