This is a large room sixty floors above the Financial District, and on an ordinary Tuesday or Wednesday you will find something a week out without working for it. The room, and why people book it for an occasion

Manhatta sits on the 60th floor of 28 Liberty Street, the old Chase Manhattan tower, and it is run by Union Square Hospitality Group, which is to say it is a Danny Meyer room with all the service instincts that implies. The interior is warm mid-century rather than glass-box modern, stone and polished bronze, low lighting, tables angled outward. The reason to come is the window: New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty, the bridges, Brooklyn behind them, and at sunset the best argument anyone has made for eating dinner in Lower Manhattan. That view is why this room takes so many proposals and milestone birthdays. It does the emotional work before the first course lands.

Two service styles share the address, and knowing which you are booking prevents most of the confusion. Dinner in the dining room is a multi-course menu, currently three courses at $120 or four at $148, with optional wine pairings, and weekend lunch is a shorter prix fixe at $65 or $78. The bar runs an a la carte list instead, snacks and starters and a few mains, with cocktails in the high teens and low twenties. The reliable way to find it is to watch the OpenTable listing the day before your target enters range and note when the next calendar day appears, since that hour will be the same every day. Sibling restaurants in the same group open new dates at midday, so if you want a single guess to plan around, late morning Eastern is the sensible place to be looking. The practical consequence of that ceiling is what people get wrong here. If your anniversary is in four months, there is no action available today beyond writing the date down with a reminder attached. A short window also hides the big nights: New Year’s Eve is not bookable until early December, Valentine’s Day not until mid January, and the Saturday before Christmas goes on sale the first week of December, later than anyone’s instincts say. Which seatings go first

Demand at Manhatta is shaped almost entirely by the light, which makes it easy to predict.

• Holidays and the December stretch. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, New Year’s Eve, and the corporate season from late November, when the whole neighborhood books at once. These are the exception to everything relaxed above.
• Window tables generally. Seating is not a field in the widget, so a view seat is a request, not a booking. Add it in the notes and repeat it warmly on arrival, and accept that it depends on the shape of the night.

If your date is already gone

Check the edges before giving up on the night. Move the time an hour either side, drop the party from four to two, or look at the bar rather than the dining room. Any one of those usually finds something, and the bar is a real option here rather than a consolation prize, with its own a la carte menu and the same window. Walk-ins are welcome too, which the restaurant says plainly, so a weeknight visit with no plan at all is worth attempting.
