Rooster & Owl Reservations: How to Get a DC Table

Rooster & Owl is chef Yuan Tang’s Michelin starred restaurant at 2436 14th Street NW, a modest room on the 14th Street corridor between Chapin and Belmont. The format is unusual: a four course, build your own menu at $125 per person that the restaurant calls a hybrid of a tasting menu and shared plates. Tang and his wife Carey opened the place in February 2019, it picked up a James Beard Best New Restaurant nomination and then a Michelin star, and the dining room never got any bigger. Getting a Rooster and Owl reservation has less to do with luck than with understanding that you are not competing for one pool of tables. You are competing for three.

How booking Rooster & Owl actually works

Reservations run through Resy, and only Resy. There is no prepaid ticket and no deposit to buy: you hold the table with a card on file, and Resy attaches a $25 cancellation fee that only applies if you cancel or modify inside 24 hours of your booking. Outside that window you can walk away at no cost, which matters more here than it sounds.

The calendar is a rolling window roughly a month deep. Checked on 29 August 2026, it ran through 27 September, which is thirty days counting the current one. The restaurant does not publish a release time anywhere on its site, but Resy carries an on sale timestamp on every seat it sells, and across nine sampled dates the answer never varied: a new date goes live 29 days ahead, at 10:00am Eastern. Saturday 5 September opened on 7 August at 10am. Saturday 12 September opened on 14 August at 10am. Friday 26 September opened on 28 August at 10am. So the working rule is simple. Count back 29 days from the night you want, and be on Resy at 10am that morning. It is the same synchronized 10am pattern described in how the Resy 10am release works.

The second thing to internalise is that this address does not run one book. Resy lists Dining Room, Bar and Patio as three separate seating types, each with its own tables and its own availability. They fill at wildly different speeds, and most people only ever look at the default view.

Why the table is so hard to get

Start with the shape of the business. The kitchen opens at 5pm Tuesday through Saturday and that is the whole week. No lunch, no brunch, no takeaway, and no a la carte option to absorb overflow demand. Every diner who wants this food funnels into five dinner services in a small room.

Then there is party size, and the falloff here is steeper than at most hard DC tables. Take Saturday 5 September 2026, measured a week out. A party of two saw 19 open slots. A party of three or four saw 8. A party of five saw exactly 2, both on the patio, at 9:45pm and 10:00pm. A party of six saw none at all, and six is the largest booking Resy will accept here. Groups of seven to fourteen have to go through the restaurant’s events form rather than the app.

Now look at the clock on that same Saturday. Every one of the eight remaining four person slots was either 5:00 to 5:30pm or 9:45pm and later. The entire 6pm to 9:30pm block was gone. That is the pattern to expect on any Friday or Saturday inside a fortnight: the shoulders survive and the middle does not. Two weeks out, the same Saturday still had 7:15pm and 8:15pm for four, so the prime window is not sold out at release, it simply erodes fast. Resy Global Dining Access also routes a slice of inventory to eligible American Express card members, so the field racing you is larger than the public calendar suggests.

The off-peak and back-door angles

One honest caveat before the tactics: this is not a walk in restaurant. The bar is an extension of the kitchen rather than a traditional cocktail bar, so there is no drinks only perch to hover at, and no advertised walk in seating. • Couples should search the bar first. Bar seats only surface for parties of one and two. On that booked out Saturday there were zero bar slots at a party of four and six at a party of two. For two people that is free extra inventory most searchers never see.
• Groups should search the patio. The covered, heated patio carries far more four and five person availability than the dining room does. It has overhead and floor level heaters plus fans, but it is not climate controlled, so dress for the actual weather.
• Move off Friday and Saturday. A Tuesday or Wednesday in the same week routinely shows 7pm and 8pm times that the weekend lost a fortnight earlier.
• Take the 5pm or the 9:45pm. Those are the two slots that survive on a full Saturday, and the four course menu is identical at both.
• Book at the far edge of the window. A date sitting near day 29 still has its full spread, including 6pm and 7:30pm, because nobody has claimed it yet.
• Consider Ellie Bird. The same team’s sister restaurant in Falls Church, Virginia is also on Resy, serves a la carte versions of the same cooking, and adds brunch. It is a genuinely easier table for the same kitchen’s ideas.

When cancelled tables come back

Cancellations are the other route in, and the timing here is unusually predictable because the restaurant’s own terms set it. The cancel and change cutoff is exactly 24 hours, after which that $25 fee lands. So the last moment anyone can hand a table back for free is the 24 hour mark, and that is where the heaviest flush of returned seats appears. Expect a thinner trickle across the two or three days before, as people firm up weekend plans and release what they no longer need.

A returned two top in a room this size can stay visible for well under a minute before somebody refreshing takes it. Worse, the 24 hour boundary for a Saturday dinner falls on a Friday evening, which is precisely when you are not staring at your phone.
