How to Get a Reservation at Kiyomi (Washington DC)

KIYOMI is chef Masaaki “Uchi” Uchino’s 16 seat sushi counter at 1895 L Street NW, on the corner of 19th and L in downtown Washington. Uchino cooked at Sushi Nakazawa before running a 13 seat lunch counter inside the Square food hall, and in April 2026 he gave the name a room of its own. Kiyomi is really two restaurants sharing one piece of wood. At midday it is a walk in shop with a $40 set course. In the evening it becomes a reservation only 15 course omakase at $135 a head, and that version is now one of the hardest seats in the city. How booking Kiyomi actually works

Dinner books on Resy and nowhere else. The listing is unusually clear about what you are buying: $135 per guest for a seasonal 15 course omakase with miso soup and dessert, smart casual or business casual dress. Lunch does not appear on Resy at all, and that is deliberate. Kiyomi’s own description says it welcomes walk in dining and takeout service at midday, then transforms into an intimate, reservation only experience in the evening.

The timing rule is the part worth writing down. Kiyomi states on its Resy page that reservations are released two weeks in advance at 1:00 PM. That is strange on two counts. A fortnight is a short horizon next to the one and two month windows most tasting counters run, and 1:00 PM is not the mid morning hour most Resy regulars have trained themselves around. The calendar behaves exactly as the rule predicts. Checked on 29 August 2026, the far edge of Kiyomi’s calendar sat at Friday 11 September, thirteen days out, with nothing beyond it. Why the seat is so hard to get

The answer is supply. When dinner started on 1 May 2026 it ran as a single seating, Fridays at 7 PM, for a maximum of ten guests, with the restaurant saying it hoped to grow into Tuesday through Friday service with 5:30 and 7:30 starts. As of late August 2026 the calendar still looked like the smaller version. On 29 August the only two dates inside the two week window were both Fridays, 4 and 11 September, and the nearer one was already gone.

Run that arithmetic and the empty calendar stops feeling like bad luck. One seating a week at roughly ten seats is on the order of forty dinner seats a month for an entire metropolitan area, and a two week horizon means only ever one or two dates exist to compete over. Party size compounds it. A four top is close to half the room, which is why searches for four on both 5 and 19 September returned nothing at all while Resy still listed 11 September as the next opening for a pair. If you have been hunting for four and hitting a wall, shrink the party before you change anything else.

Demand is not the small half of it. The Resy listing carries a 5.0 rating across 34 reviews, $135 for fifteen courses undercuts most counters of this caliber, and the sake list is running toward fifty international pours by the glass.

The off-peak and back-door angles

Kiyomi is one of the rare hard rooms where the best move is not a booking trick. It has a front door nobody has to fight for, as long as you can eat at noon.

• Just go at lunch. This is the real answer for most people. Weekday lunch takes no reservations, so you walk in and sit down. The set course runs $40 for seven pieces of nigiri plus a hand roll and miso soup, or six hand rolls instead, and hand rolls are about $7 each a la carte. • Ask for two, not four. On a ten seat seating a four top is an enormous request, so a pair is the realistic search. It is the difference between an empty calendar and a live one.
• Be there at 1:00 PM, two weeks to the day. Count back fourteen days from the Friday you want and be on the page before the hour, not after it. Seats in a room this size go in the first minute, not the first afternoon.
• Take the newest date, not the prettiest one. The date that just entered the window has been picked over for seconds. The one already sitting there has been picked over for a fortnight.
• Watch for the expanded schedule. If the Tuesday through Friday plan with 5:30 and 7:30 starts arrives, the early seating and the midweek nights will be the softest slots on the calendar.

When cancelled seats come back

The most useful line on the listing is the cancellation term. Kiyomi states that cancelling within 24 hours of the reservation, or simply not turning up, is charged the full omakase price per guest. That is $135 a head walking away from you, $540 for a party of four. A penalty that size does not prevent cancellations, it schedules them. Seats come loose inside the 24 hours too, because people get sick regardless of what it costs. On a ten seat seating one released pair is a fifth of the night, and it appears in front of everybody who has been staring at a sold out fortnight. A returned Kiyomi seat is not open for an hour.
