How to Get a Reservation at Cana (Washington DC)

Cana sits at 2412 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan, and describes itself plainly as a love letter to Brazil in the spirit of Rio de Janeiro. At its core it is a boteco, the Brazilian neighborhood bar, so the room runs on shared plates, cachaça, a charcoal oven behind an open kitchen, and records spinning in the corner. It was a James Beard semifinalist for Best New Bar in 2025 and landed at No. 26 on Washingtonian’s 100 Very Best in 2026, which is a lot of attention pointed at one narrow room. How booking Cana actually works

Cana takes reservations on Resy, and only for two of its three seating areas. The Dining Room and the Chef’s Counter are both bookable, and they serve the same dinner menu; the Chef’s Counter simply sits directly in front of the open kitchen, closer to the charcoal oven and the pass. The bar and front patio are walk-ins only, first come and first served, and they never appear on Resy at all. That distinction matters more here than at most restaurants, because half the people staring at a sold-out Resy calendar could have simply walked in.

The release window is where the published sources disagree, and it is worth knowing both numbers. Cana’s Resy listing says reservations are released on a rolling basis, opening 30 days in advance. The restaurant’s own reservations page answers the same question with a rolling 28 days. Checked at the end of August 2026, the bookable calendar ran roughly four weeks out, which lines up with the shorter figure. Treat it as about a month and check the day your target date should be entering range, rather than trusting an exact count. There is no synchronized citywide opening hour attached to this venue the way there is for the famous 10am Resy openings, so a new date simply appears as the window rolls forward.

No prepaid ticket and no deposit is published on either the Resy listing or the restaurant’s own site. What Cana does publish is a timing rule: the table is held for 15 minutes past your reservation, after which it goes to the first walk-in. Changes go through Resy, by replying to the Resy confirmation text, or by texting (202) 839-0624, which the restaurant says is more reliable than calling on a busy night.

Why the table is so hard to get

Start with the schedule. Cana is closed Sunday and Monday, so the week is five services: Tuesday and Wednesday 5pm to 11pm, Thursday 5pm to midnight, Friday 5pm to 1:30am, and Saturday with brunch 11am to 3pm and dinner from 5pm. Five nights of one small room is not much inventory for a restaurant carrying this much press.

Then there is the shape of the demand. Checked on 29 August 2026, that evening had no online availability at all, and the next date with real openings was three days out. A Saturday the following week looked healthier on paper, with dozens of slots listed for a party of four, but the gap in the middle told the real story: nothing between roughly 6:15pm and 8:45pm. The calendar was not empty, it was hollowed out exactly where everyone wants to eat.

The late hours add a second kind of pressure. Cana is a bar as much as a dining room, with live Bossa Nova on Wednesdays and DJ sets from 10:30pm on Friday and Saturday, plus a $20 entry after 10:30pm on those nights that comes back to you as a drink credit. One footprint is serving a full dinner service and a late-night bar crowd, and the reservable seats are the part that gets rationed.

The off-peak and back-door angles

If you are locked to one specific Friday at 7:30pm, Cana is genuinely hard. If you can move anything at all, this is one of the more forgiving hard tables in DC:

• Take Saturday brunch instead. Brunch runs 11am to 3pm on Saturday against a fraction of the demand that 8pm dinner draws.
• Book Tuesday or Wednesday. The early-week services are the quietest of the five, and Wednesday comes with the live guitar set, so you are not trading down.
• Aim at the shoulders. With the missing window sitting between 6:15pm and 8:45pm, a 5pm or a 9pm booking is a completely different search. Late works well on Friday and Saturday, when the room runs until 1:30am anyway.
• Check the Chef’s Counter separately. It is its own inventory on Resy with the same menu, so it can have seats on a night the Dining Room shows none.
• Shrink the party. Two moves far more often than four, and four more often than six.

When cancelled tables come back

The second door is cancellations, and Cana’s own rules work in your favor here. Guests are pushed to modify through Resy rather than call, so changes land in the system rather than in a paper book. The richest stretch is the 24 to 48 hours before service, when people firm up weekend plans and release what they no longer need, with a second flurry on the day itself.
